MRI of the Sinus
Basics: What is an MRI of the Sinus?
Although an MRI is not as effective as CT in defining the paranasal anatomy and therefore is not typically used to image the sinuses. MRI can also tend to be more expensive than CT; However, it can help rule out fungal sinusitis and may help differentiate between inflammatory disease, malignant tumors, and complications within the skull. MRI of the sinus is also useful for showing soft tissue involvement.
Discussion of images above:
The sinus MRI above demonstrates multifocal severe sinus disease involving the right ethmoid, maxillary sinuses and right frontoethmoidal recess. There is also debris contained within an air-fluid level at the right maxillary sinus. Findings are suggestive of acute superimposed over chronic sinusitis.
