Ultrasound for Thyroid
Basics: What is a Thyroid Ultrasound?
A thyroid ultrasound is used to check for nodules (or lumps) in the thyroid and parathyroid glands as well as measuring the size and shape of both to see if they are enlarged. A thyroid or parathyroid ultrasound can also be used to guide the placement of a needle during a thyroid biopsy.
Discussion of images above:
The sound waves obtained during this thyroid study are emitted from a hand-held transducer placed over the thyroid area. A lubricant jelly is used so the waves are transmitted easier. It is a quick, painless and safe exam. The pictures above show a complex lesion involving the right lobe of the thyroid gland.
